Air passengers arriving at Auckland Airport may be forgiven for thinking New Zealand has an alarmingly liberal approach to drugs.
The latest edition of the airport’s magazine for visitors, Arrivals, has caused quite a stir after it featured an advert for the campervan hire company Wicked Campers featuring a man snorting a pile of cocaine as he looks over a snow-capped New Zealand mountain range.
Managing director at Arrivals’ publisher People Media Mike Taillie claims the ad went in during the last hours before publication and that the first time he saw it was after the magazine was published.
He said efforts would now be made to rip out the ads from the 100,000 copies that were due to be circulated but had now been recalled.
Meanwhile Wicked Campers, which has offices across the world including the UK, has tweeted about the incident, inviting followers to say what they think.
The company has hit the headlines before, when it put signs up in its Australian vans reading “Kangaroos, run the f***ers down!”.
It also attracted criticism for the quality of its vans in the past, many of which feature what has been described as “crude” slogans.
