Social Media Affecting Normal Work Life Balance
In this age of ‘media communications’ and ‘me- first desperation’, Social media is arguably a welcome change to our unending needs and interrogation. Its usage has not just spread its grip among the general population but also among at-work internet users who are visiting the sites daily for both professional and personal reasons in large numbers.
According to the report from Internet security firm, ‘Face Time Communications’, there has been a miraculous increase in the proportion of worldwide web users logging on to social networking sites. The reasons that users give for using social sites at work are just professional networking with friends and colleagues, getting to know about colleagues and off course a general research. Meanwhile reports also revealed that only 37% are known to log on the social sites for specialized function of marketing to customers.
Survey revealed Linkedin was the top site for professional social networking in 2009, followed by Twitter and Digg, surfed by more than three quarters of respondents for personal work reasons. Face Time also found that 95% of at-work Internet users head to social sites during the workday for either personal or professional reasons. On the other hand, 61% does so at least once daily, and 15% said that they stay glued to such networking sites all the time throughout the day both at home and on job front.
Meanwhile another survey from Liberty Mutual suggests that users are spending some mixed messages regarding at-work social networking. Nearly three-quarters said it was unacceptable to check Face book unrelated to work, although Face Time found more than 9 in 10 respondents are doing so.
