South Coast caravan parks lead the way
A report in the Illawarra Mercury says that South Coast is among the nation’s favourite spots for camping and caravanning.
Figures released by Tourism Research Australia show the region is second only to the state’s North Coast as the most desired destination in the Australian market with domestic and international visitors spending about two million nights in caravan and camping accommodation on the South Coast in 2005, contributing to a NSW total of eleven million nights.
Caravan and Camping Industry Association chief Barry Baillie said the South Coast’s natural assets were a major drawcard for holiday-makers, adding “It has wonderful beaches and national parks and is less developed than other coastal areas.”
The report found visitors who stayed in caravans or camping accommodation were more likely to go bushwalking or take rainforest walks and visit national parks than other travellers.
It also said the camaraderie between these holiday-makers drew more people into the industry.
Families and large groups, who tended to travel during school holidays, made up 48% of the market and seniors accounted for 38% but they travelled throughout the year.
