Spain regains popularity over Turkey
Turkey has fallen off the top spot for European summer sun, according to latest booking and search figures of online travel specialist Holidays-Direct.
Spain has regained its position as the number one choice based on the number of hits on the company¹s website in the last six months.
Turkey had taken over from Spain last year but has suffered recently because of the bird flu scare, said the company which forms part of the Co-operative Travel Trading Group.
Holidays-Direct marketing manager Paul Reeve said bookings to Spain are already up on 2005.
“On assessing confirmed bookings we see Spain is the destination of choice. When people search for Spain it is usually alongside other phrases, such as
‘sun deal’ or ‘bargain holiday’.
“Spain is definitely established in the consumers’ minds as a value-for-money destination for families where you¹re guaranteed to get good weather.”
He said the availability of flights from UK airports and the buoyant Spanish property market was also helping to boost interest.
