Spain says British holidaymakers to get free healthcare ‘until 30 June’
Spain has cast doubt over whether it will offer British holidaymakers free healthcare indefinitely after issuing a document today stating that it will continue until 30 June.
In a document titled ‘Information on Brexit for British tourists’, it says that they will have access to the Spanish healthcare system ‘provided that the UK acts reciprocally with Spanish nationals’.
The UK has already confirmed it will offer a reciprocal healthcare arrangement with EU countries, at least initially.
But the document from Spain continues: "Until 30 June 2021, persons entitled to healthcare in the UK or Gibraltar under the responsibility of of the relevant entities will receive healthcare from the Spanish national healthcare system, in the same terms and subject to the same conditions as established prior to January 2021."
The document doesn’t mention what will happen after 30 June, so it seems that free healthcare, in Spain at least, is only guaranteed for the next six months.
A UK spokesperson for the UK tourism office said they had no further information at this time.
The document also includes information on other changes for travel to Spain for Britons from the end of the two-year Brexit transition period ends at midnight tomorrow.
There will be thorough passport checks, it says, travel will be limited to no more than 90 days within 180 days an international driving licence won’t be required for trips of up to six months but people travelling with pets will face further restrictions.
