Spendthrift passengers love New Oasis of the Seas
Passengers are finding dozens of ways to spend money on the Oasis of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship.
"It has proven to be an even stronger on-board revenue generator than we had foreseen, and we were pretty optimistic before," Royal Caribbean CEO Adam Goldstein said during a conference call to discuss the company’s first quarter earnings.
On-board spending is running at a blistering pace at the almost six-month-old vessel.
Goldstein says spending on the ship makes it the best of the line’s 21 ships.
At 225,282 tons, Oasis is more than 40 percent larger than the next largest cruise ship. It boasts an industry leading number of extra-charge restaurants, bars, stores and other outlets where passengers can spend money.
Goldstein said the line is looking at how it can translate Oasis’ success in on-board spending and other areas to its older ships.
"Clearly, there (is) a lot of learning from Oasis with respect to both guest features and on-board spend potential,” he said.
