Spokane convention center wants to be green
Spokane, Washington’s 100,000 square foot addition to its convention center is striving to receive an official “green building” designation from the nonprofit US Green Building Council.
Said Kevin Twohig, executive director of the Spokane Public Facilities District:
“We want to improve the ground we’re going into. We want to build out of materials that are as sustainable as possible.”
So far, only one other convention center has received the designation. That was the 1.5 million square foot center in Pittsburgh.
Groundbreaking was last month on the addition in Spokane. The cost is $79 million.
The project when completed in 2007 will give the center 372,565 square feet of meeting and exhibit space.
The center received a significant boost when it acquired the US figure skating championships scheduled for 2007.
