A spring trip to the Capital Region promises an unforgettable blend of cultural exploration, outdoor adventure, and culinary delights.

From the iconic monuments of Washington, D.C., to the waterfronts of Annapolis and the landscapes of Virginia’s wine country, this diverse region offers something for every traveller.

With blossoming cherry trees and an array of seasonal events, springtime is the perfect time to explore and experience the best of the Capital Region.

 

Virginia

Historic Garden Week, 20 – 27 April

For more than 90 years every spring, visitors to Virginia have been inspired by beautiful landscapes, public gardens and more than 1,000 world-class floral arrangements created by the Garden Club of Virginia. This year Historic Garden Week has an eclectic mix of statewide events. On 20April join The Garden Club of Alexandria on a walking tour of the old town as well as the secluded gardens within the city. Head to Leesburg on 21 April and enjoy a walking tour of the town’s historic properties with The Leesburg Garden Club. There are 35 unique tours to choose from across Virginia.

 

Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains

Spring in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains sees its numerous waterfalls come to life. Hiking along the trails that lead to these waterfalls allows visitors to immerse themselves in the surrounding forests, while also offering ample opportunities for peaceful spring picnics. Two popular options include Cascade Falls and Roaring Run Falls. Cascade Falls in Giles County is a 69-feet fall, and the hike is a four-mile loop with the upper trail offering views of the creek to see striking rock formations. Visitors can also head down to Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia’s second largest body of water situated in Huddleston, Virginia. This offers 13 hiking trails ranging between half a mile and three miles long, as well as opportunities to rent boats and kayaks on the river.

 

George Washington’s Mount Vernon Spring Wine Festival

Sample Virginian wines while enjoying the serene views over the Potomac River at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. From 17 – 19 May, visitors can join featured Virginia wineries such as Barboursville Vineyards from Barboursville, Lake Anna Winery from Spotsylvania, and Fox Meadow Winery from Linden. While sipping a glass of wine, visitors can enjoy the live blues music.

 

Washington, DC

Filmfest DC, 18 – 28 April

The largest and longest-running annual international film festival in DC, Filmfest is back for its 38th year. Showcasing 65 hand-picked films across 10 days this festival looks to highlight the artistic merit of each one.

 

Georgetown French Market, 26 April – 28 April

Spring sees the Georgetown French Market return to Washington, DC. This year marks the 21st annual open-air market with the popular weekend festival set to host more than 40 neighbourhood boutiques, antique sellers, restaurants, salons, and galleries. Visitors can expect up to 75% off retail price at the outdoor market. The Saturday and Sunday will also showcase live music, family-friendly activities, and pop-up book sales.

 

Passport DC, 1 May – 31 May

Passport DC returns to the nation’s capital this May. Foodies can enjoy the International City Food Festival from 3 May to 5 May to try local restaurants and vendors offering international flavours. This year also sees the United Kingdom and Australia added.

 

Maryland

May Day celebrations in Annapolis, 1 May

Wander around the old town of Annapolis, Maryland. Visitors are invited to breathe in the freshly cut flowers during the Annapolis May Day celebrations as the city is transformed into a spring haven. Residents who choose to partake are given the chance to win a ribbon from the judges and the award-winning blue ribbons include an invitation to an upcoming May Day tea party. Stroll past the perfectly arranged baskets and enjoy al fresco dining in the historic district.

 

Berry picking at Maryland farms

Spring is the perfect time for berry-picking and visitors are invited to take part in this Marylander tradition to pick strawberries, cherries, blackberries and blueberries at multiple orchards. One of these orchards is Catoctin Mountain Orchard, situated near Frederick, a family-owned business that has been running since 1948. It showcases jams and freshly made goods perfect for a sweet treat. Those looking to purchase fresh produce without travelling to a farm can visit one of the many farmers’ markets around Maryland.

 

Get lost in jazz music every Tuesday night

Throughout the months of spring music lovers can join Bright Moments Jam Sessions every Tuesday at Keystone Korner, Baltimore. Listen to up-and-coming jazz musicians from Greater Baltimore. Offering a space for both regulars and newcomers, the musicians ensure an energetic atmosphere all night.
