Stansted passengers delayed by rail collision

Wednesday, 15 August 20123 min read

Rail disruption is affecting Stansted airport passengers after a Stansted Express train collided with an overhead cable.

More than a hundred people missed their flights this morning after the collision just before 5am.

Passengers were evacuated from the Greater Anglia train by police and paramedics after its front window was smashed close to Northumberland Park Station on the London to Cambridge route.

The service is still experiencing disruption with blocked lines between Tottenham Hale and Waltham Cross. Delays are expected to last until late tonight.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "We have engineers on site working to repair the damage as quickly as possible and are investigating the causes.

"Passengers should check with National Rail Enquiries for the latest information before travelling."

Stansted Express’ twitter feed said that services were operating with reduced frequency due to overhead wire damage in the Northumberland Park area.

Other Greater Anglia services are also being diverted or delayed with services running from London Liverpool Street being diverted via Severn Sisters.
