Enjoy a West Indian breakfast Grenadian style at Mt Moritz

Grenadians are well known locally, regionally and internationally for their  spicy cuisine complimented by our natural blessings of having the largest selection of spices in the Caribbean. We definitely know how to “cook up ah storm”. One such occasion is the “The West Indian Sunday  Breakfast, in true Grenadian Style at Mt. Moritz.

Mt. Moritz is a community which is perched on a hill top overlooking the St. George’s outer harbor. The Community of Mt. Moritz is approximately ten minutes drive from the spice capital of St. George’s, Grenada. This community represents the true resilience, warmth and friendliness of the Grenadian people.

On Sunday June 27, 2009, the first ever Breakfast event of this nature was held, signaling the birth  of  the West Indian Breakfast at Mt. Moritz. It has grown from a community activity to an event which attracts hundreds of locals and visitors coming together for one main purpose, to enjoy a true Grenadian breakfast. The breakfast takes place the last Sunday of every month and has been consistent for the last two years

The menu consists of a variety of scrumptious, mouth watering Grenadian  delicacies that even visitors can enjoy the local flavors.  From coconut bakes, breadfruit balls, fish cakes (salt fish fritters), fried breadfruit,  fried coo coo (made from local corn flour) steam ground provisions, local fruit salad,  fried Jacks, and a variety of souses from the famous souse bar,  to  traditional Grenadian  cocoa tea or  local herb teas. Patrons are  entertained with music  from local artistes and sweet steel pan rhythms  as they  enjoy their breakfast.

One visitor described the Breakfast as a “pleasant and filling experience to dine among friends under the open sky”.

The West Indian Breakfast is the brainchild of the Mt. Moritz Development Organization.  In an interview with Mr. Nicholas Harris, President of the Organization, he emphasized the importance of hosting this event every month in an effort to bring persons closer together. He further stated that the success factor behind this event  is community involvement.. “Everyone in the community is involved in some way”.

The most important point however, is that the funds acquired from this event, goes directly back into the Mt. Moritz community and is used for the improvement and maintenance of the local infrastructure (such as the rehabilitation of the Com- munity Center and playing field) and providing scholarships for the children in the community to secondary schools.

The Mt. Moritz West Indian Breakfast, is a true representation of the viability of community tourism. The delivery of this product brings tremendous economic benefits to the people of Mt. Moritz, through the revitalization of some aspects our Grenadian culture and places a smile on the faces of the many visitors who savor the "finger licking” dishes that are served by com- munity members. This also creates a sense of pride and satisfaction of the people in the community as they deliver a quality, spicy visitor experience.

So if you in happen to be in Grenada, on the last Sunday of any month, make the trip to Mt. Moritz, and experience the West Indian Breakfast in true Grenadian style yourself!
