Stelios: No buy-back plans at present
Stelios Haji-Ioannou, founder of EasyJet, has stated that he has no current plans to take the no-frills carrier private – but that such a move could be considered if the company’s share price continues to fall.
As reported by News From Abroad, speculation has been rife that Haji-Ioannou, who with his family owns 41 per cent of the company, would buy the airline back just two years after he stepped down as chairman.
The Independent quotes him as saying: “There is no current plan on the part of EasyGroup and my family to take the company private. My current view is clear, having discussed it with both the chairman and chief executive of EasyJet.
“I wish to work with and support the board and senior management in order to protect and improve shareholder value and I believe the board will be taking measures to achieve these ends. All sensible options are considered from time to time.”
Shares in EasyJet fell back 6.5p to 143.75p yesterday – less than half what they were worth when the company was originally floated in 2000 at 310p per share.
