STGM – Grande Motte Cable Car Company – Brings Green Skiing, Golfing, Hiking and Biking to the French Alps

Saturday, 07 Dec, 2016 0

STGM (Grande Motte Cable Car Company) is a subsidiary of the Compagnie des Alpes group and has operated in the Tignes Ski Area area since 1989. In accordance with the licence entrusted by the municipality of Tignes, STGM is responsible for the operation and maintenance of facilities including ski lifts, shuttle buses, and a golf course as well as the development of the Ski Area in a sustainable and socially responsible way.

STGM is committed to protecting Tignes’ natural, cultural and communal heritage and has expertise in the evolution and development of this extraordinary mountain environment. The company recognises the social responsibilities required for the ongoing progress of the Ski Area and focuses on equity, diversity, responsibility and transparency in its relation with stakeholders.

STGM aims to meet its strategic goals whilst protecting the natural and cultural environment. As a consequence of this approach, and in recognition of the evolution of the company, STGM is the first ski lift company in the world to have been awarded Green Globe certification.

STGM Managing Director, Nicolas Provendie said, "Green Globe certification is something of which the Directors of the STGM are particularly proud. Our role as a major local stakeholder pushed us to initiate the Green Globe certification process. We are developing purchasing and hiring policies that favour both the local economy and local employment. Our goal is to continue to pursue this commitment, which is beneficial both environmentally and socially."

STGM is committed to ongoing improvements as part of its sustainable management practices. By the end of 2016, 100% of all paper purchased will be recycled in line with a purchasing policy for environmentally friendly products. The company also favours working with businesses located in close proximity to Tignes. And when ski lifts need to be replaced, STGM is reducing the use of pylons as much as possible, instead favouring materials like wood, so that they blends into the landscape.

During the Sumer of 2016, a new ski lift was built which allowed the company to remove two draglifts with 3 pylons, along with the departure and arrival zones, therefore bringing back more of the natural beauty. For irrigation of the Ski Area’s golf course, weather patterns are monitored by a weather station to determine the amount of watering needed. And to improve the overall amenity of its grounds litter pick up days are organised to clean and preserve the natural landscape around the the chairlifts.

About STGM

STGM, a subsidiary of the Compagnie Des Alpes Domaine Skiable group since 1989, is responsible for the development, operation and maintenance of the ski lifts, golf course and resort shuttle bus service within the concession entrusted by the village of Tignes. The operation of the ski runs and snowmaking machinery is carried out by the Régie des Pistes with funds from the STGM.

The STGM operates 40 ski lifts during winter providing fast and safe transportation for skiers as well as a fleet of 8 buses encouraging visitors to leave their cars in the carpark, and use the eco-friendly and reliable shuttle service. The Tignes Ski Area is linked to that of Val d’Isère and thanks to a dual ski pass provides access to one of the largest and most beautiful ski areas in the Savoie region of the Alps.

Summer operations are equally important with the operation of 13 ski lifts on the glacier between 3,000m and 3,456m, which are accessible to skiers and walkers and 3 lifts open to mountain bikers. Between the lake and the glacier, at an altitude of 2,100m, an 18-hole golf course is an additional service offered by STGM from the end of June to mid-September. Particular attention has been paid to its integration within the landscape whilst respecting the environment.
