Strike hits Ryanair flights today

Ryanair flights to and from Ireland are being disrupted today as pilots go on strike.

In the first day of industrial action since the airline agreed to recognise trade unions, 30 flights between the UK and Ireland have been cancelled.

Ryanair apologised to customers but said it had tried to protect those travelling from Ireland to Portugal, France, Italy, Spain and Greece. It usually operates 290 flights from Ireland across Europe.

Unions have warned of further action may follow if Ryanair does not make concessions on some employment terms.

Ryanair claims Aer Lingus pilots, who are members of the Irish Air Line Pilots Association, are behind the strike.

"It is unacceptable that competitor airline pilots are actively organising strikes by Ryanair’s pilots when these airlines will be the direct beneficiaries of any such disruption," it added.

Ryanair is also facing further strikes in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Belgium later in the summer.

Cabin crew in Italy plan to strike for 24 hours on July 25, while crew in Spain, Portugal and Belgium will strike for 48 hours on July 25-26.
