Strike threat to London Olympics

Friday, 20 July 20123 min read

Up to 5,500 UK immigration officials will strike next Thursday in a dispute about job cuts and pay, disrupting nearly 130,000 passengers as they arrive the day before the Olympic opening ceremony.

British Home Secretary Theresa May said the action by border guards was “shameful” as it threatens disruption to people travelling to London for the Games.

Immigration minister Damian Green said contingency plans were in place.

Public and Commercial Services Union general secretary Mark Serwotka said, “The lives of staff have been made intolerable by these (job) cuts and they’re at breaking point."

London Mayor Boris Johnson has said he does not think the union will succeed in disrupting the Olympics.
