Summer in the City of Bridges

British Airways non-stop service from London Heathrow to Pittsburgh resumes in time for the 2022 summer season.

Pittsburgh will be even more accessible to holidaymakers from the UK and Ireland following the reinstatement of the non-stop service.

It will operate four times weekly aboard Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

Pittsburgh is in western Pennsylvania (just 30 minutes’ drive from the city’s airport) where three rivers meet, and golden bridges line the banks’ parks, trails and green landscape.

Comprising 90 neighbourhoods and well placed to explore surrounding states, Pittsburgh is ideal for those travellers looking for a mid-sized city break, family-holiday or a launchpad for an epic eastern road-trip.

Visitors will enjoy the wide-open spaces, 24-miles of riverfront trails, cultural festivals and events, its walkable downtown district, and seemingly endless cultural museums and attractions.

There is also a thriving culinary scene and a variety of hotel accommodation options.

Earlier this year, VisitPITTSBURGH launched a new marketing campaign to welcome back international travellers and to showcase its one-of-a-kind experiences, events and attractions.

‘Only in Pittsburgh’ focuses on highlighting the diverse cultural, culinary, and sporting activities that are unique to the steel city.

The campaign video features insights and city secrets from real Pittsburghers, sharing their favourite experiences, including the seven-story Andy Warhol Museum – the largest museum dedicated to a single artist in North America; the iconic Senator John Heinz History Centre with an entire floor dedicated to the 57 varieties, and two historical inclines – one of which is the oldest continually operating funicular in America.

The video welcomes back international travellers and encourages them to explore the city and its 90 neighbourhoods. Here are just some of the highlights.

State Park: For avid cyclists, the city offers a 150-mile bucket list bike trail connecting Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., along a disused canal towpath, in addition to 165 parks and 24 miles of riverfront trails in the city centre.

Arts and culture: Pittsburgh is home to two of the world’s largest exhibitions, including the 20,000-sq-feet dinosaur exhibit at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History – also the official home to the most famous dinosaur skeleton, Dippy. On the North Side, the National Aviary – the only independent, indoor, non-profit zoo in America is dedicated to birds with over 150 species. Downtown, Pittsburgh’s Cultural District features nine theatres in just one square mile showing over 1,500 shows annually.

Beyond Pittsburgh lies the expansive countryside of the Laurel Highlands, home to three Frank Lloyd Wright properties, including the iconic Fallingwater – often referred to as his masterpiece.

In 2022, Pittsburgh will welcome several new openings, including hotels, attractions and innovative dining options. Highlights include, The Landing Hotel at Rivers Casino Pittsburgh is due to open in summer 2022 with 219 guest rooms and panoramic views of the city from the North Shore.

Furthermore, space robotics company Astrobotic will open the Moonshot Museum next summer where visitors will be able to experience a real spacecraft being built in addition to hands-on lunar exploration activities. Pennsylvania’s first museum dedicated exclusively to space, the feature attraction will be a large window through which visitors can watch real lunar landers and rovers being built and readied to fly to the Moon.

In 2021, Pittsburgh welcomed the opening of The Industrialist, a 124-room boutique hotel that opened in downtown Pittsburgh. Rooms pay homage to Pittsburgh’s unique character, decorated with brass fixtures and warm colours, and the twelve suites boast views of the winding Monongahela River.
