Super typhoon heads for the Philippines

Thursday, 7 November 20133 min read

The Philippines is preparing itself for the arrival of a super typhoon, expected to hit the country tomorrow.

Equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane, Super Typhoon Haiyan is forecast to be the most powerful tropical cyclone of any kind this year with winds of up to 173mph.

It is expected to make landfall tomorrow and to reach the Manila metro area, home to 12 million people, on Saturday.

The typhoon’s path is also likely to cross the central Filipino region struck hardest by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake last month.

Evacuations are already underway in some areas and some schools have been closed. Ferry operations have been suspended.
