SuperShuttle shutting down at year-end

Monday, 16 Dec, 2019 0

The distinctive blue and yellow vehicles of shared van service SuperShuttle will disappear at the end of the year.

SuperShuttle announced it will cease all operations from January 1, 2020.

Established more than 35 years ago, it began ferrying travelers to and from Los Angeles International Airport, and gradually built up a large network at airports around the country and overseas.

It served almost 100 cities including Baltimore, Minneapolis, and Phoenix, Latin America, Europe and even in Asia.

However it had closed operations in these US cities in recent weeks after losing market share to ride hailing apps Uber and Lyft over many years.

In a letter to franchisees, the company said: ‘SuperShuttle plans to honor all reservations and walk-up requests for service through December 31.’

It blamed ‘a variety of factors including increasing costs and changes in the competitive and regulatory landscape.’

These ‘have called into question the economic and operational viability of the company’s operations.’

The closure impacts both the SuperShuttle shared van service and ExecuCar black car private service.
