Surge in US travellers boosts Eurostar sales
An increase in the amount of business traffic and a surge in travellers from the US boosted Eurostar’s sales revenues by 11% to £880 million last year.
The cross-Channel train operator has announced a preliminary unaudited operating profit of £57.6 million for 2017.
It said it had seen a 26% increase in the number of US visitors compared with 2016, a rise which it is expecting to continue due to the royal wedding in May and the Ryder Cup in Paris in September.
The volume of business travellers grew by 8% last year compared with 2016.
Eurostar will launch a new direct service between London and Amsterdam on April 4. Chief executive Nicolas Petrovic said: "Last year we saw a real revival in the US market combined with good growth in business travel. Following a positive performance in 2017 we are now well placed to expand our reach to The Netherlands. With over four million passengers travelling by air every year between London and Amsterdam, the growth potential for the service and the overall market is significant."
