Taiwan’s air regulator will punish individual airlines if their pilots fail pre-flight alcohol tests.
The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) will impose a fine of NT$3 million (about US$100,000) which is the maximum allowed under the Civil Aviation Act.
The CAA’s ‘zero tolerance’ comes after two airline pilots recently tested positive for excess alcohol.
Those plots work for Far Eastern Air Transport and China Airlines.
Despite the crackdown, airline pilots found over the limit are extremely rare in Taiwan.
Only one other incident has happened in the last 15 years, the CAA said.
Authorities completed an investigation into the first recent incident and decided to revoke the license of the Far Eastern Air Transport pilot, who had already been fired by the airline.
An investigation into the CAL pilot is still ongoing and is expected to be complete early next month.
