Two UK technology companies have combined to produce interactive maps that integrate high-definition aerial footage and web-based mapping.
Earthware and Skyworks have developed Avimap (Aerial Video Integrated Mapping) which gives web users what the companies describe as a “unique interactive experience”.
The BBC used this technology for its World Cup online coverage (www.theworldcupmap.com) to show where the FIFA stadia are but the companies say it will enhance any travel company’s web offering by letting the user live and breathe destinations when choosing where to go on holiday.
Earthware managing director Neil Osmond said: “By creating a seamless interactive experience online, Avimap is a flag bearer for the art of the possible, as it’s the first time that HD aerial footage and web based mapping technology have been linked in the cloud environment.
“It really paves the way for future applications which blend video and mapping.”
Earthware sales and marketing director Chris Finch told Travelmole: “We believe national travel and tourism agencies would benefit from integrating the Avimap experience into their existing websites. We have a huge array of stock footage readily available but could also use existing footage where agencies have them.
“I also think the tour operators, bigger hotel chains and airlines would be interested in this as it would enhance the experience for users of their websites. Pretty much any company that is offering multiple destinations and wants to offer potential clients a richer more immersive experience as they are choosing their holiday would benefit.”
Although most travel websites already have maps, they simply allow the user to click through to text or pictures. Avimap lets the user view the destination in high-definition video whilst finding out more about the destination using the map.
