Thai Airways International will become the first airline in Asia to fly a commercial passenger flight using biofuel.
The flights will operate from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, a major tourist destination in the north of Thailand, on December 22, with 100 students and professors onboard.
Revenues from the flight will go towards developing renewable energy in Thailand, said the airline.
Thai Airways' president Pivasvasti Amranand said: "Thai has developed an important project on sustainability, in line with His Majesty the King's vision on renewable energy.
As the national carrier, Thai is opting to operate a commercial flight using bio jet fuel as one way to help reduce global warming and carbon dioxide emissions.
"We are hoping to pioneer the use of bio jet fuel in Asia and Southeast Asia, which hopefully other carriers in the region will follow suit.”
The airline did not specify what type of biofuel would be powering the flight or how much conventional jet fuel would be used.
