Thailand extends quarantine period again
Thailand has increased the quarantine period back to 14 days again as the current wave of Covid cases puts a summer reopening for tourism at risk.
From 1 May, all new arrivals must spend a full two weeks in quarantine and in-restaurant dining is banned in Bangkok and several other provinces.
Quarantine had recently been cut to 10 days, or five days for vaccinated visitors.
Additionally there are limits on the number of small gatherings in the hardest hit areas of Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan.
People may not gather in groups of more than 20.
Thais have been asked not to travel unless essential.
The country has recorded more than 2,000 new cases daily for the past few days although Thursday’s total saw a small reduction.
Only about a quarter of a million people are fully vaccinated
The current situation is threatening to derail Phuket’s plans to reopen to international visitors this summer.
Tourism companies have been pleading with the government to allow them to import and pay for vaccines privately to inoculate their frontline staff.
Under current plans vaccinated foreign tourists could come to Phuket quarantine-free from 1 July although that is still dependent on the local population being at least 70% vaccinated.
