Thailand quarantines dozens after new confirmed MERS case

Wednesday, 27 January 20163 min read
Thai authorities have ordered the quarantine of at least 32 people after a positive case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome was discovered.
The MERS carrier was identified as a 71-year-old man from Gulf state Oman.
All people who may have come into contact with the man are being quarantined, including his son, hotel workers, fellow passengers on the plane he arrived on and taxi drivers.
The man is currently isolated at the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Disease Institute in Bangkok and is in a stable condition.
"The new case of MERS is a reminder of the continued risk of importation of the disease from countries where it still persists," said Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Southeast Asia regional director for the World Health Organization.
"All countries need to further enhance surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections, focus on early diagnosis, and step up infection prevention and control procedures in health-care facilities to rapidly detect any case of importation and effectively prevent its spread."
It is the second confirmed case of MERS in Thailand, after a 75-year old, also from Oman, was diagnosed with the virus last year.
Oman borders Saudi Arabia where the virus was first discovered in 2012.
