Thailand spending USD700 million to boost domestic tourism

Monday, 17 Jun, 2020 0

The Thailand government has green-lighted several projects worth over $700 million to  help the tourism industry recovery.

It includes a $579 million package to give travellers a 40% discount on hotel stays for up to five nights.

They will also get THB600 baht ($19) per day to spend on food and shopping.

It is hoped the subsidies will kickstart the domestic tourism economy.

Additionally the government is funding THB2 billion ($64 million) for up to two million Thais to travel by air, regional buses, and car rentals, with a subsidy of THB1,000.

A third package will reward medical workers and other frontline workers with discounted holidays.

The funds will be available to use for domestic travel from July to October.

Domestic flights have gradually restarted but international services are still grounded.

The government may restart international flights next month but no definite decision has been made, as talks are still ongoing.

Tourism is a key industry for Thailand making up more than 10% of GDP.
