Thailand to step up safety standards for tourists following tour boat sinking
Thailand is aiming to restore confidence in the destination in the wake of the Phuket boat disaster, in which 47 Chinese holidaymakers died, with the launch of a National Tourism Safety and Security Committee.
The committe will be overseen by tourism and sports minister Weerasak Kowsurat.
Weerasak said guidance issued by the committee will not only focus on marine tourism but also on land-based attractions and crime reduction.
He has instructed the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to create new preventive safety and crisis management manuals.
Following the sinking of the Phoenix boat, Thailand has seen mass cancellations from China, which is its largest source market and accounts for more than a third of all travellers to the country.
TAT will soon announce special promotional packages for the Chinese market targeting the peak Golden Week period in October.
