Thailand will open Phuket to long-stay foreign travellers in October

Friday, 23 Aug, 2020 0

Thailand will open island tourist hotspot Phuket to foreigners from October.

However travellers keen on a short beach break won’t be allowed.

Visitors will be required to stay for at least 30 days, with the first two weeks in hotel quarantine.

After completing that, they will be permitted to visit other areas, Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn told Reuters.

Two Covid-19 tests will be taken during the quarantine before they are able to travel to other parts of the island, according to Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

Thailand hasn’t had a confirmed case of a local transmission for nearly three months, but the tourism industry has been battered by the collapse of global travel due to the pandemic.

The Thai economy contracted 12.2% in the second quarter.
