Twenty-one new qualified Scottish Tourist Guides battled through snow drifts to attend their Graduation Ceremony at the National Gallery of Scotland on St Andrews Day.

Neil Oliver, Archaeologist and TV presenter of successful BBC series ‘The History of Scotland” and “Coast” presented the certificates.   This was Neil Oliver’s first official function as Honorary President of the STGA, since being invited to take up the position.

Tourism was recently identified as one of the key business sectors that could lead Scotland out of the economic doldrums, with visitor numbers in the summer of 2010 generally holding up well.
The Chair of the STGA, Norma Clarkson said    “Professionally qualified guides improve the visitor experience and answer the thirst for knowledge among many who visit our country every year.    This event celebrates the achievement of the latest group of recruits to a professional association that is vital to Scottish tourism.”

Reflecting the mix of nationalities now attracted to Scotland for holidays, the new guides include speakers of six languages, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Gaelic, in addition to eleven other languages on offer, including Polish, Japanese and Mandarin.

The Scottish Tourist Guides Association is the professional membership body for qualified and accredited Tourist Guides in Scotland in accordance with the European Union CEN, BSI and International standards.

There are approximately 500 members within the association, most, split into northern Blue Badge national tourist guides, Green Badge regional tourist guides and Yellow Badge site guides for Scotland.
