The Year of Alabama Birding

The Year of Alabama Birding

Sunday, 31 Mar, 2023 0

Travelers flock to Alabama to glimpse more than 430 species of birds across the state.

The Alabama Tourism Department is enhancing this experience by launching the Year of Alabama Birding for the prime March-to-May birdwatching season.

The Year of Alabama Birding consists of various initiatives and promotions designed to attract birders to the state.

An eight-page section in the 2023 Alabama Vacation Guide features the top birding trails and events in Alabama, including the options for those with special needs.

Visitors will hear birdsongs at all of the Alabama Welcome Centers.

The eight two-minute tracks of birdsongs recorded in Alabama will not only allow visitors to hear the birdsongs  but they can also take them along for their journey by streaming them from select music platforms.

Alabama has eight Welcome Centers in Ardmore, DeKalb, Cleburne, Lanett, Houston, Baldwin, Grand Bay and Sumter. More information at Welcome Centers

On the Alabama.Travel site visitors will also be able to Follow a Birder for their personal Alabama bird-watching insights and tips.

Throughout the campaign, videos will focus on a handful of local birding enthusiasts, to show viewers the birds they see and trails they use.

Lee Sentell, director of Alabama Tourism said ‘Whilst we are committed to making birding one of the department’s popular “Year of” campaigns, the title may not give the campaign its due.”

“We are not ending it after a year but will be launching components of it during the next two years. ”

Videos were also filmed on the Festival of the Cranes at the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in Decatur and Eagle Awareness Weekends at Lake Guntersville State Park in Guntersville.

The videos are being promoted through the Alabama Vacation Guide and the Alabama Tourism website

A Find Your Flock quiz will appear on the website.

The game will allow visitors to answer questions about their likes, dislikes and personality to find out what Alabama bird they most resemble.

Then they will be told which area of the state and which birding trails they can visit to see ‘their’ bird.
