Thousands stranded due to Indonesian ash cloud

Thousands of travellers remain stranded in Indonesia due to flight disruption caused by volcanic ash from eruptions at Mount Raung and Mount Gamalama.

Five airports in Indonesia are now closed due to the ash cloud, although Bali’s Ngurah Rai, also known as Denpasar, has re-opened.

Airports serving Surabaya, Indonesia’s second biggest city, plus Malang in East Java and Ternate in North Maluku were shut yesterday.

Two other airports, in Banyuwangi and Jember, have been closed since last week.

The closures come at a busy time for Indonesian travel with many people leaving the cities to visit their families during the Eid holiday, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said flight disruptions could continue for sometime and advised travellers to contact their airline, tour operator and travel insurance provider for further information.
