Boeing Co’s communications chief has been ousted after a 33 year old article he wrote came back to haunt him.
Senior vice president of communications Niel Golightly resigned after an employee dredged up the article he wrote when in the US Navy entitled ‘No right to flight.’
It was arguing against deploying women in combat that Golightly now describes as ‘offensive.’
"My article was a 29-year-old Cold War navy pilot’s misguided contribution to a debate that was live at the time. My argument was embarrassingly wrong and offensive," he said.
"The article is not a reflection of who I am, but nonetheless, I have decided that in the interest of the company I will step down."
He resigned after speaking with Boeing CEO David Calhoun.
"I greatly respect Niel for stepping down in the interest of the company," Calhoun said adding that the plane maker has an ‘unrelenting commitment to diversity and inclusion in all its dimensions.’
Golightly only took over the role as Boeing’s senior vice president of communications earlier this year.
