Tourism bosses welcome Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games win
VisitBritain chief executive Tom Wright has welcomed Glasgow’s successful bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
He described the event – to be held just two years after the Olympics in London – as “fantastic opportunity” to showcase the city to a global audience of over one billion people.
“We applaud the hard work that has gone into making this possible,” said Wright. “Glasgow is the fifth most popular destination in Britain for international travellers and we look forward to seeing the additional benefit their success today will bring.
“Given Glasgow’s long history of successfully staging major sporting and cultural events, VisitBritain is convinced that Games organisers picked the right destination.
“With a great vision for the Games, the spirit of Glasgow and Glaswegians – with all of Scotland and Britain behind them – is sure to make this an unforgettable event.”
Philip Riddle, chief executive of VisitScotland, said: “Winning the 2014 Games is credit to a real team effort across the country, and an outstanding achievement on the part of a confident, forward-looking Scotland.
“The capital investment required to host the games, the worldwide media coverage and the projected increase in tourism in the years following the games makes this a milestone in our progress towards growing tourism revenues by 50% by 2015.”
