Tourism Malaysia recently released travel packages for fans of the ‘King of Fruits.’
It announced ‘Durian Tourism Packages 2024/2025.
“The tourism package features a diverse range of options including golf getaways, glamping experiences, and captivating sightseeing tours,” it said in a statement.
Malaysia is one of the few countries in Southeast Asia where the durian fruit grows.
It is also found in Indonesia and Thailand.
The prized fruit is notorious for its overpowering, pungent smell but the unique taste and texture is one of a kind.
It has a yellow-brown spiky outer skin and the inner ‘fruit’ has meat like consistency.
The Durian smell has hit the headlines regularly over the smell.
A flight in Indonesia was delayed due to several passengers’ nausea caused by a shipment of Durian fruit in the cargo hold.
The smell has triggered gas leak alarms in apartment blocks and college campuses in the UK, Germany and Australia.
A Chinese motorist who tested positive for drink driving managed to get the charge dropped after proving he had just eaten a Durian.
The late food critic Anthony Bourdain said of the Durian: “Your breath will smell as if you’d been French kissing your dead grandmother.”
Tourism Malaysia expects the packages will generate more than $400,000.
