Tourism Northern Territory in N America’s Kate Shilling speaks with The Mole
There is so much new product in the Territory that is so appropriate for the North American market that we have been getting a great response from the US buyers, said Kate today at ATE 2006, with examples including: –
Aboriginal Airlines, has been operating regular services to 40 destinations and communities in South Australia, Northern Territory and Western Australia for over 23 years. www.aboriginalair.com.au
Arnhemland Barramundi Nature Lodge is situated near the Aboriginal community of Maningrida, approximately 300kms north east of Darwin and is a joint venture with Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation, with the Lodge catering primarily for anglers seeking incredible, remote fishing experiences. www.barralodge.com.au
Gunya Titjikala is the ultimate, authentic aboriginal experience, with Aboriginal people having used this land for thousands as a meeting place, gatherings, eating and shelter. 120kms south of Alice Springs, Gunya provides guests with a range of programmes that enrich, share the rich culture, art and history. www.gunya.com.au
Orion Expedition Cruises are the only 5* luxury expedition ship operating in Australia all year round and Orion is the only ship offering Kimberley round trips Darwin to Darwin. Launched in 2003 the vessel the most sophisticated vessel in her class and boasts a range of technical innovations and equipment. www.orioncruises.com.au
Kate said that small product buys great PR and in the USA Tourism NT is also really targeting the leaders in educational travel, alumni groups and natural history organisations offering small groups experiences.
She said that immersion is the key to the sell and these small operators deliver that, adding that we have to maintain Tourism NT‘s ownership of the outback.
Numbers from the USA are up 25% on 2004 and we are noticing a real shift from the traditional coach tourism to much more independent travellers, who are seeking and willing to construct their own experience.
