Tourism operator forced to cancel reef trips
An ABC report says that a north Queensland tourism operator has bowed to the pressures of soaring fuel costs and global economic instability and has cancelled its day tours to the Great Barrier Reef.
The trips to Kelso Reef in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park by Townsville’s Sunsea cruises will cease on October 12.
General manager Darin McDonald says the service is no longer viable and cancelling it was a difficult decision.
“It’s certainly been a gut-wrenching exercise,” he said.
“We’ve spoken to the Members of Parliament to try and cough up some money to try and make this thing happen.”
“We can’t continue to make the losses we have on this operation. We’re conscious of the impact its going to have to the local tourism market.”
“We’ve looked at other options of how we can save this business and make a go of it, but realistically we cant see any other option but to have to close the doors.”
