Tourist loses arm in Hawaii shark attack

Monday, 19 August 20133 min read

A 20-year-old German tourist snorkelling off Maui lost her right arm to a shark on Wednesday, in the fourth shark attack here this year.

Her life was saved by a tourist from California who raced into the bloody water to pull her out.

The attack took place off Palauea Beach, also known as White Rock beach. It was the second shark attack off Maui in two days.

Rick Moore, a 57-year-old high school teacher and pastor from Orange County, California, told local news KFVE that he heard 20-year old Jana Witteropp screaming in the water about 75 yards out.

He pulled her out and performed CPR as the girl slipped into unconsciousness.

She is in critical condition at Maui Memorial Hospital, and on a respirator. Her arm was not recovered.

Officials closed the beach for a mile in each direction after the attack, but it has since reopened.
