Tourists die in ‘unprecedented’ snowstorm in Pakistan
At least 22 people died after hundreds were stranded in a blizzard in their cars overnight near the mountain resort town of Murree, Pakistan.
Roads were blocked for miles with cars bumper-to-bumper.
Some deaths were attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning as people struggled to stay warm.
According to local official Tariq Ullah, the amount of snow was unprecedented.
"There were strong winds, uprooted trees, avalanches. People around were terrified."
There was no warning.
"We didn’t get any type of alert from the government, from Google, from the news, from the weather," tourist Duaa Kashif Ali, from Islamabad, told AFP.
Ten children from two extended families were among the dead.
"A high-level inquiry will be launched and if there is any kind of negligence, then action will be taken," Punjab provincial government spokesman Hasaan Khawar said.
