Tourists found dead after car breaks down in China desert
Four tourists died after a desert safari ended in tragedy.
A nine-car convoy was crossing Lop Nur Wild Camel National Nature Reserve in northwest China.
A vehicle bringing up the rear got left behind and apparently broke down.
After a comprehensive search of the desert the car was located with all four found dead.
The convoy planned the 470-kilometre trip across the desert with only food and fuel for two days, local media reported.
Police say they likely died of dehydration.
The convoy did not have authorization to travel in the reserve which is home to many wild camels.
The local authority has long forbidden individuals and groups from entering the reserve with fines and potential criminal action for those caught.
The surface daytime temperature in the China desert can reach 70-80 degrees.
It is prone to sandstorms and there are areas of quicksand.
