Tourists killed in Egyptian resort bombings
At least 23 people were killed including three foreigners in bomb attacks on the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Dehab.
More than 60 people were injured, including three Britons, as three blasts hit the tourist area of the small coastal resort popular with backpackers and divers.
About 100 British tourists were in the resort on package tours in addition to independent travellers. Thomson said all 43 holidaymakers it had in the area had been accounted for and were safe.
A statement from Thomson’s Germany parent company TUI said all daily excursions in the Sinai peninsula had been cancelled and four holidaymakers out of 400 in the region had requested to fly home.
Several restaurants, shops and a supermarket were destroyed in the main tourist street close to te seafront at 19.15 local time last night, during an Egyptian public holiday.
Suicide bombers are suspected of being involved in two of the blasts.
The attacks follow last July’s bombings in Sharm el-Sheikh, 80 kms away.
The international community condemned the attacks, the third to rock the Sinai peninsula in Egypt in two years.
A Foreign Office helpline has been set up at 020 7008 0000.
