Training People – a feature

Welcome back to the weekly Training People Worldwide item on ways to develop your people.

Brilliant Travel and Bev Brightspark have been somewhat busy over the last few weeks, developing a new web site and planning some marketing strategies to ensure that the name remains well known.  Bev is well aware that, these days, a professional web site is important if a company is to stay ahead of the competition.

Because she does not have the skills and knowledge to develop her own web site, Bev decided to invest money in getting a professional to do it for her.   She met with a few different organisations and eventually settled on one that she felt comfortable with.

An issue with some web site designers was that she felt they were so intent on the technical aspect of the job that they were unable or unwilling to understand what she really needed.   And even if they did understand, Bev felt intimidated by their knowledge and inability to talk in her language.   Bev reflected that sometimes her travel consultants fell into the same trap – they knew so much about the industry that they forgot that the customers didn’t know all the ‘stuff’.

She made a mental note to bring this up at a next staff meeting – the KISS principle of ‘Keep It Simple, Stupid’ was a great acronym to remember when speaking with all clients.

Bev was keen to keep the cost of the web site down as much as possible, though she still wanted a professional look.   She chose to go with the option of a package that allows her to alter the content of the site as things change.    One of her consultants, Brian, is computer literate and keen to be involved in the project so he has been given the responsibility of updating the site whenever necessary.

It was important to Bev that every effort was made to ensure that Brilliant Travel appeared on the first page of a search engine – she was aware that people rarely go beyond page one of their search result.   She took advice from David, the web site designer and followed his guidelines of using key words in the content.

Despite some teething problems such as being off line for a couple of weeks, things were now starting to fall into place and Bev felt confident that her endeavours would result in even more business for Brilliant Travel.

Training People Australia are currently relaunching their company and web site and have encountered the same challenges as Bev Brightspark!   However their web site should be ready to go in a couple of weeks.  In the meantime, they can be contacted on the following email/phone numbers:
