Travel companies beat other sectors as good places to work

Thursday, 11 Sep, 2015 0

Travel companies are generally better to work for than companies in other sectors, but their record has declined in the last few years.

According to the latest report from Best Companies, the people behind ‘The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies’ list, the travel sector scores higher than the average for almost all criteria.

Of the 56 sectors used for its study in 2015, travel companies came 20th overall and, by criteria, they came:

– 8th for My Team
– 14th for My Manager
– 15th for Giving Something Back
– 22nd for Wellbeing
– 26th for Leadership
– 27th for My Company

But the travel sector scored less well for Personal Growth (28th) and for Fair Deal (36th).

This, according to Best Companies researchers, suggests the perception of investment in employees, either through pay and benefits or training, is declining within some travel firms.

Meanwhile, based on the scores of the travel companies that have competed in the last few years, a number have caused the average scores to decline over time.

"This change appears to be created within individual companies, rather than as a general trend, as many companies within the travel sector, most notably Flight Centre, have seen year on year improvement throughout this time period," said the report.

"This also indicates that it is not an issue of size, with our biggest travel retailer scoring consistently higher each year, whilst other companies see a year on year decline."
