After several days of gloom, travel industry shares enjoyed a modicum of success as London’s equity markets made some serious headway.

The FTSE 100 index pushed ahead 77.9 points to close at 4169.2 – a gain of some 1.9 per cent – while the FTSE 250 fared less well but still gained 19.1 points to close at 5476.9. Dealers were very busy and traded 3.7 billion shares on the day.

Among the airlines British Airways added 5.25p to close at 171.5p, easyJet added a quarter of a penny for a 220p finish, and Ryanair close at 410p, up 8p.

Online retailers also did well, with ebookers adding 9p to close at 534p and lastminute.com gaining 6p for a 261p finish.

First Choice Holidays lost 1.9p to end the day at 118p, and MyTravel added a quarter of a penny for a closing price of 20p.
