TravelMole North America’s Publisher Frances Kiradjian Sits Down with IHG’s Yale Feldman
It was apparent from the first handshake that Yale Feldman is the ultimate ‘Hotel General Manager’. His experience includes working for all types of owners from REIT’s to individuals, which spans over 24 years. After spending 9 years as a CPA, he started his hotel career with Marriott, where he spent 2 years as an intern working in all departments of the hotel.
Feldman believes that the ultimate investment in a client includes ensuring every detail of their stay is taken care of, including recommending other restaurants or venues at other hotels even if it means sending revenue elsewhere. If that is what the client wants, that’s what they get.
His current new position at at the IHG Dallas property involves helping get the IHG name out to the U.S. market, as IHG is better known overseas than it is in North America. He feels that IHG has a much better food and beverage program which is more creative and flexible than other brands he has worked for.
Feldman’s mentor is George Washko, who first hired him at The Marriott and taught him how to be a great GM. He recalls George even calling his wife from time to time to see how she felt he was doing, as well as the sometimes harsh statements that he’ll always remember. Especially the time he made some mistakes early on when George sternly said, “You’re in a very sensitive stage of your career.” Words Yale wouldn’t soon forget.
When he’s not playing the role of the ulimtate Hotel Manager Yale and his wife are big baseball fans and are Washington Redskins season ticketholders.
