TravelMole readers say: "Call off the strike"

Thursday, 18 March 20103 min read

TravelMole readers have responded to a letter from British Airways cabin crew with a resounding call for this weekend’s strike to be called off.

We received instant reaction from subscribers to yesterday’s letter which sought to spell out the reason why the airline’s in-flight workers are resorting to take industrial action in their dispute with the airline over pay and conditions.

The overwhelming response was critical of the Unite union’s plan to stage walk-outs this weekend and for a further four days later this month.

TravelMole readers appear to have little sympathy for the argruments put forward by cabin crew in an effort to justify the decision to take industrial action.

Many fear a dispute will go as far as being the beginning of the end of BA, while others are highly critical of the arguments put forward by cabin staff.

Some say their clients are switching to other airlines to avoid likely disruption due to the looming strikes.

Meanwhile, Unite has written to transport secretary Lord Adonis calling on him to investigate BA’s plans to deploy strike-breaking crew.

The union argues that the airline must demonstrate that it has taken all steps to ensure that those who are working on aircraft have cleared UK national security checks, which normally take three months to process.
BA must also show that strike-breaking crew have been vetted in accordance with the security requirements of destination countries, and that these countries have been properly advised of BA’s intention to use fast-tracked stand-ins.
"Unite also wants these assurances to be placed in the public domain so that passengers can be confident that standards have not been compromised," the union said.
