Monthly travel technology news round-up
May 10 – May has been TUI’s month for distribution news. The German-based giant kicked off the month announcing plans to shareholders to become a global internet-based travel business.
May 16 – A week later TUI UK revealed its own internet trends saying the web was fast replacing travel agents as the most popular way to book travel – 50% of Thomson holidays and flights are now booked online, ahead of its 2007 target.
May 16 – Thomson’s online trends can come as no surprise to market research companies PhocusWright and Mintel, which both published reports saying the UK’s tour operators are well-placed to compete with online travel agencies.
May 23 – The latest news is that US travel search specialist Kayak.com now has the funding to take Europe by storm. It was only a matter of time with rival sites sidestep.com and bezurk.com having already staked a claim this side of the pond.
