Vietnam: Tour groups put off travel after dozens of cases of deadly bug

Tourists are already starting to cancel trips to parts of the Far East following the outbreak of a severe type of pneumonia that has already killed nine people.

As reported by News From Abroad, health authorities across the world are on alert over the disease after the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned it could be a major threat to health.

Dozens of cases have been reported in Vietnam and there have reports that shops are selling out of surgical masks, vitamins and nasal medicines, while at least two large tour groups have postpones trips to the country. A nurse in Vietnam died of the disease after treating a United States businessman. He died in Hong Kong on Thursday.

However, a group of British businessmen from the Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Industry is still planning to go ahead with a trip to Vietnam next week.

Across the world, airport staff are being told they should not check anyone in if they have symptoms of the disease, while airport officials in the Philippines have been spraying the interiors of planes flying in from countries known to be infected.
