Trivago analysis shows impact of strong pound

Monday, 27 July 20153 min read

British travellers can expect to pay up to 21% less for hotel stays in 12 Eurozone countries this summer.

Analysis by trivago.co.uk found the strength of the pound against the euro means prices for July have dropped by up to 21% compared with July 2014.

The country with the largest drop in prices for Brits is Cyprus, where rates are an average of £22 per night cheaper compared to last year – £82 compared to £104.

Meanwhile, travellers in the Eurozone are paying up to 15% more for their hotel stays.

Prices have increased the most in Turkey, where travellers within the Eurozone can expect to pay an average of €16 more per night for their hotel room – €121 compared to €105 last July.

UK holidaymakers are paying 12%-13% less than their European counterparts, taking into account the exchange rate this year compared to last year.

"By putting the price difference in euros next to the price difference in pounds, the potential savings for British holidaymakers this summer are really highlighted," said Denise Bartlett, UK public relations for Trivago.

"In France, for example, prices are 11% cheaper for British holidaymakers, but 1% more expensive for Eurozone travellers compared to last summer. In Spain, prices are 10% more expensive for European holidaymakers, but 2% cheaper for visitors coming from the UK.

"While hopefully this will not deter European holidaymakers from travelling this summer, British holidaymakers should make the most of this opportunity to visit countries within the Eurozone."
