True mid-Atlantic meeting point: Iceland
Iceland’s famous volcanic ash briefly overshadowed its growing reputation as a meeting place fueled in part by its location: midway between North America and Europe.
Promoters say it is only five hours away from New York by air; London is three hours.
“Icelandair offers nonstop service from Boston, New York’s JFK and Seattle, and operates seasonal flights from Washington, Dulles, Minneapolis, Orlando and Toronto,” according to promotional materials.
One of Iceland’s major attractions is its geothermal and natural phenomena that includes glaciers, waterfall and volcanoes.
The later were made famous during the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, which grounded European air traffic for several days earlier this year.
Its major city of Reykjavik has over 2,500 hotel rooms that range from four-star deluxe to B&Bs. Its growing reputation today is a “unique fire and ice” backdrop to various adventure activities.
Another of its attractions for North Americans is that its official language is English.
And, oh yes, the volcanoes.
