TSA braced for busy airports at Thanksgiving
Nearly 55 million people are expected to travel next week for Thanksgiving, just marginally short of pre-pandemic numbers.
The AAA says it could be up to 98% of 2019 levels.
About 49 million people predicted to travel by car.
According to the AAA, air travel is up almost 8% over last year, with 4.5 million Americans flying.
“Travelers should anticipate long TSA lines. If possible, avoid checking a bag to allow for more flexibility,” said Robert Sinclair, AAA. spokesperson.
The Transportation Security Administration anticipates crammed airport security checkpoints nationwide this holiday travel season.
“We expect to be busier this year than last, and very close to pre-pandemic levels,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske.
“We are prepared to handle the projected increase in travel volumes next week.”
This is despite higher airfares.
Airports have also warned that parking may be in short supply.
The busiest days are typically Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving and Sunday returning home.
TSA expects to screen over 2.5 million passengers on Sunday, November 27.
On that day in 2019 it screened nearly 2.9 million passengers at checkpoints.
