The Transportation Security Administration had its busiest ever Thanksgiving week handling 21.6 million people in total.
The TSA screened more than 2.6 million passengers this past Sunday making it the fifth busiest day in the agency’s history.
Fears of large lines backing up outside airport terminals due to the recently introduced tougher security measures didn’t materialize.
"Enhanced security screening measures and the use of TSA canine teams were in place during the busy Thanksgiving travel period to ensure security of air travel," TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement.
"I am very proud of our Transportation Security Officers for their work and attention to detail during a very hectic time, ensuring safe travel for all passengers."
Government data released this week said 98% of all flyers waited less than 20 minutes in line while 99% of those enrolled in TSA’s PreCheck program waited no more than 10 minutes.
