TSA screens record number of travelers for Memorial Day

The Transportation Security Administration says it screened the most travelers in a single day in its history during the Memorial Day holiday.

The agency said it screened 2,792,525 passengers and crew members on May 24, the Friday before Memorial Day.

The previous busiest day was during last year’s Thanksgiving holiday.

Despite the record number, the TSA said about 96% of people waited no more than 20 minutes to clear security cleaning.

The average wait time was under five minutes for registered TSA PreCheck passengers.

It is some achievement for the agency considering current staffing is below optimum levels.

Last year’s partial government shutdown led to many TSA screeners quitting, and hundreds of officers have been seconded by Customs and Border Protection to help out at the southern border to stem the flow of illegal crossings.

The TSA says it expects to screen about 12 million more passengers this summer compared to 2018.
